Urine Electrophoresis
Comments

Interpreter: protein detected in random specimen, report mg/dL and mg/L; in 24 hr collection, report mg/dL and mg/TV.

Code              Description

TAA

A trace amount of albumin is detected by electrophoresis. The level is  __mg/dL(   mg/__), as measured by a  sensitive chemical method for protein. Within normal for urinary protein excretion.

Interpreter: Add,  “EPZ”

NPU

No proteins detected by electrophoresis. A trace amount of (protein; albumin) was measured at ____mg/dL (mg/__) by a (sensitive chemical; highly sensitive immunochemical) method.

UPA

Urine protein electrophoresis shows albumin at a level of __mg/dL (__mg/_ ). No globulin fractions are detected. The pattern and level are consistent with  a (mild, moderate, severe) selective proteinuria.

Intepreter: add,  “EPZ”

UPA 1

(Mild; Moderate; Severe) non-selective proteinuria (___mg/dL; ___mg/__) consisting of albumin at a level of ____mg/dL ( ___mg/___) and globulins at        mg/dL( __mg/__).

Intepreter: add,  “EPZ”  if no discrete band(s) are detected.

“Recommend”

Code              Description

EP

We recommend serum and urine (24 hour collection) immunofixation electrophoresis  (IFE) (IFE-U), if clinically indicated.

EPI 1

We recommend urine (24 hour collection) immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE-U) to rule out light chain disease, if clinically indicated.

EPI 2

We recommend urine (24 hour collection) immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE-U), if clinically indicated.

EPI 3

We recommend urine (24 hour collection) electrophoresis  (U-PEP), if clinically indicated.

EPO

See above under  “Gamma.”

IF

We recommend serum immunofixation  (IFE), if clinically indicated.

FDB

A (faint/large/other modifier)  discrete band (____g/dL [if serum]; ____mg/dL [if urine]) of uncertain significance is detected within the ____ (and _____) zone (s). We recommend (specimen type) immunofixation for clarification, if clinically indicated.
